May Rains had Little Impact on Drought Conditions

Heavy rain that pelted much of the Pacific Northwest and Northern California in late May did not significantly ease the drought situation, federal water monitors said.

Rain increased topsoil moisture and temporarily reduced the need for irrigation during what was an unusally cool, wet month, but provided “negligible” long-term relief from drought, according to the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service.

Farmers Make More Land Fallow As Oregon Drought Spreads

More than half of Oregon’s counties are now officially in a state of drought – 19 of them, at last count, compared to nine last year.

To get a sense of how drought is affecting agriculture in the state, OPB’s “All Things Considered” host Kate Davidson spoke with Jim Johnson, land use and water planning coordinator for the Oregon Department of Agriculture.
